Final Speech Page

MY BEST ADVICE:

The best advice I’ve offered to a peer would be to make eye contact and speak up. They knew what they wanted to talk about and the topic was nice but it’s important for us to hear them clearly. Making eye contact with the audience connects you to the audience.

WHY IT’S MY BEST ADVICE:

This is my best advice because no matter how good the speech or topic is if no one hears what you are talking about it goes nowhere. It’s important as a speaker that your audience is able to hear you loud and clear for them to understand what you are talking about. Also making eye contact you are connecting withe the audience. This makes you You look more confident as a speaker.

BEST ADVICE FROM MY PEERS:

The best advice from my peers would be to minimize my hand gestures. They also suggested to  use less filler words. They said I speak at a good volume and make good eye contact.

WHY IT’S THEIR BEST ADVICE:

This is something I do a lot and them pointing it out to me makes me become aware of my use of words and hand movements. Using fewer filler words makes the speech flow better and have better transitions. The less I use filler words and hand movements the more I sound professional, confident and less shaky.

BIG REFLECTIVE MOMENTS:

– Giving my speech twice to different groups in class helped me practice presenting to different people and I was able to receive feedback.
– I couldn’t focus on what I was saying so I ended up telling half of my story and I stumbled transitioning from one point to another. That’s because before giving the speech I lost confidence in what I knew and what I practiced. Walking around the room before giving the speech would help relieve some of the stress.

WHY THESE REFLECTIVE MOMENTS MATTER:

I learned that it’s important to practice in front of people. A big part of doing a speech is how much I practice beforehand. I learned that it’s important to notice the things that help relieve some of the stress. That it’s important to calm down and be confident of what I know before giving the speech because that would also lead to reducing my stress that would lead to better speech overall.

MY BIGGEST STRIDES:

In speech two, where I talked about how to wrap a hijab, there was a lot of growth between dry-run and the final. There was a big shift in the introduction. In the dry-run the introduction was broad and didn’t cover the topic very well. For the final speech, I have made some changes where I started a little broad but then talked about the meaning and the purpose of wearing a hijab. That was a better transition to introduce the steps of wearing a hijab.
